While modern church structures don’t often follow traditional church appearances of steeple and stone, Canyon Ridge had a struggle with its facility—it looked so little like a church that people didn’t know what it was; community members thought it was a water tank or public service building. Visioneering designed in such a way to not only add more space but to visually attract people onto the church campus.
The result was a desert camping theme for the 2-story children’s building, complete with a tube slide (to imitate a mining shaft) that went from the second story down into the grotto—the children’s play area. Inside they mixed large group small group format areas with for flexible use with maximum security for kids. The warm climate zone also allowed for exterior features but were fully shaded and protected from elements.
Visioneering also designed a chapel for the Canyon Ridge desert campus plan using desert durable materials.
But perhaps the biggest contribution from this design project was adding a full second skin to the big curve of the main building that alerted visitors that this was, indeed, a church that was inviting them in. Visioneering provided exit balconies for the upper risers, an elevator, and a rotunda that carries the elevator and that helps turn the corner, designed in the style of a kiva. At the base of that is outdoor baptismal. It acts as an outdoor water feature throughout the week but if they remove a few plates, the church can have public baptisms right off the palm court, in the center of campus, also visible to people driving by.
For Visioneering, the story always leads the way, and for two separate projects that were 5 years apart, Canyon Ridge returned to the same Scripture that gave heart to their story. While the staff was almost entirely new the second time around, they brought up the same verses from God’s Word. For Visioneers like Bob Bergmann, this moment was inspiring: “That was confirmation that the work we do—if done right—is a work of discovery for something God already knows for that community and that space. We become the experts of helping a community draw out a story that God has in their space and put it to form.”
