When Visioneering takes on a project, our ultimate aim is not just to solve problems but to look for a campus plan that fulfills the highest and best use of the entire property God has gifted to each organization. That was the case for Harvester Christian Church.
Harvester is set in a beautifully forested campus on a large hill in St. Charles, Missouri. The hill could be seen, and perhaps was, as a disadvantage to dropping people off, picking people up, and having a central gathering space. But we tried to flip that perspective and suggested: what if we took advantage of the hill and built risers to put the new worship center there?
Now you can either enter in from the upper plaza level and go right to the family life gym and classrooms across a small courtyard. Or you can enter in from the bottom space where you are presented with a two-story open area that houses a baptismal and grand staircase or an elevator to take you up to the main floor worship space. At the upper level a curved, wood plank wall designates the entryway (which had been a difficulty to find previously). The lower campus has a long, covered drop-off area.
“I think it’s the only church we’ve done with a baptismal in the lobby,” noted Visioneer Bob Bergmann, Creative Principle.
Bob also described his favorite story from this project: The forested part of the property has a lot of trails that Harvester uses every year for their Journey to Bethlehem, a big event drawing in tons of people from the community. “We didn’t have good data on these trails,” Bob explained. “One of our designers was a runner and had a tracking watch, so she ran the trails. Then we printed them out and brought them to scale for our master plan.”
