Kingsland Baptist Church in Katy, Texas doesn’t just see their church facility as the main place where people go to find Jesus. They understand that the church is about sending people out to go and make a difference in their own homes, on their own streets. Their intent is to reach 10,000 homes in their community. But when the church does invite their neighbors to worship with them, the church wants to be welcoming and easy to navigate.
To support their vision, we designed three areas for Kingsland:
We redid their master plan and the parking of their current campus. The Visioneering team reimagined how to create a trinity of spaces where you come in from the central gathering area and either go into the adult worship space, the youth area, or the children’s section. In the renderings you see that the new worship center would be out on street, the existing worship center would become the youth area, and the children’s ministry would be tucked safely on the backside where parking is. There would also be more of a front door invitation to the community to welcome them in.
Currently, we are executing an initial phase of interior makeovers to better use Kingsland’s central spaces. Basically, we want it to be easier for people to map their way through the building while creating more of a center of gravity to help distribute people to the areas they want to go.
The church also has a 60-acre property on the outskirts of town that they purchased. Per their request, we designed a whole town for them. This would have a new church as the village core and would also have an administration spot and café which could be open throughout the week. The village included housing, an elderly care facility, a YMCA, childcare, retail development, plus rivers, lakes, and parks all in this flood-controlled zone. The project advanced and matured, and Kingsland was able to sell off a large portion of the property to a real estate developer to create single-family homes. Yet the church has maintained the main segment of the property so that it might build a new facility to become the town center with activities for youth, town hall events, and concerts; they would host a café and, of course, have worship on Sundays.
