If you are like most church leaders, very little in your training prepared you to lead a building project, much less choose a church architect. You may know how to preach, cast vision, lead staff, shepherd people, and navigate hard ministry decisions, but selecting the right architect for a major building project is a very different challenge. Most leaders learn about design and construction on the fly, piecing it together from renovation projects, volunteer workdays, contractor conversations, or that one mission trip a dozen years ago. So if choosing a church architect feels unfamiliar, you are not behind. You are normal.
There is a great deal riding on this decision. The architect your church hires will influence far more than walls, finishes, and square footage. That choice will shape how ministry happens inside the building for decades to come. It will affect how guests arrive, how children are checked in, how people gather, how volunteers move, how classrooms function, and how the church grows into the future. In other words, this is not just a design decision. It is a ministry decision.
Before you hire an architect, take the time to evaluate the firm carefully. The right questions at the beginning can save your church from expensive mistakes later. These seven questions will help your leadership team slow down, ask better questions, and choose a church architect with greater wisdom and clarity.
This should be the first question out of your mouth. A church should only hire an architect who holds an active architectural license in the state where the project will be built. That may sound obvious, but you would be surprised how many churches have paid for drawings or planning work only to discover later that the plans could not legally be used. That is a painful mistake and an expensive one.
A licensed architect has met the professional requirements to practice in that state and is accountable to the standards that govern the work. If a firm is vague, evasive, or unable to answer this question clearly, that is not a minor detail. It is a warning sign. There is simply too much at stake to move forward with uncertainty on something this basic.
This question matters more than many churches realize. Just because someone can design a building does not mean they can design a church. A church is not just another commercial building with a steeple added on. It is a unique ministry environment with a very specific set of demands.
Church architecture requires an unusual blend of skills. The building must support hospitality, worship, children’s ministry, education, security, volunteer movement, parking turnover, and technical production, all within one coordinated environment. That is not the same as designing an office building, a school, a retail center, or a prison. If your church is building a church, it makes sense to hire a church architect who understands how those ministry functions work together and how the building will quietly shape them over time.
And for the record, a few photos of churches in a portfolio does not make someone a church architect. There is a big difference between an architect who has designed a few churches and one who specializes in church architecture. If the project matters, choose the architect with the deepest experience designing churches. It is a decision you will not regret.
This question gets missed all the time. The person presenting the proposal is often not the person who will actually lead the design. Renderings can be beautiful, and finished project photos can be impressive, but those images do not always tell you who is doing the real work on your building.
Large firms sometimes win projects with senior leaders and then hand the work to junior staff once the contract is signed.
This question becomes even more important in design-build projects. In some arrangements, the builder leads both the project and the design while the architect supports the construction team. In others, the architect leads the design process and works closely with the builder to bring that vision to life. Those two approaches can produce very different results. When the builder drives the design, the building tends to reflect construction efficiency. If the architect is leading the design, the building is shaped first around how the church actually functions. For most churches, that difference matters more than they realize. Most churches are better served by the latter approach.
Ask specific questions. Who will lead the design? Who will manage the day-to-day work? Who will be in the room when key decisions are made? If the portfolio includes work you admire, ask whether the same people who created those projects will actually be involved in yours.
Churches should not assume they are hiring the person they met in the first meeting. Before moving forward, make sure you know exactly who will be responsible for shaping the design of your building.
There is a big difference between someone who will simply draw plans and someone who will genuinely walk with your church through the process. Most churches are not looking for a hired gun. They are looking for a team that understands the weight of the decision, cares about the ministry, and is willing to help the leadership navigate the process well.
A good church architect is not simply trying to create a portfolio piece. They are listening for the mission, the culture, the constraints, and the opportunities that make your church unique. Their role is not just to produce drawings, but to help the church think clearly about the building it actually needs.
That should show up in the way they explain their process. A thoughtful architect should be able to describe how they help the church discover needs, test ideas, make decisions, and stay aligned around the vision. When you hear them explain how they work, it usually becomes very clear whether you are hiring a vendor or gaining a ministry partner.
This is where many projects begin to drift. Design decisions have cost consequences, and those consequences do not wait until the end. A church architect should have a clear process for keeping design and budget connected throughout the project. If they do not, the church can end up deeply invested in a concept that was never financially realistic in the first place.
Ask how the architect monitors cost during design. Ask how often pricing is tested, what role estimators or contractors play in the process, and how the team handles scope adjustments if costs begin to climb. Hope is not a budget strategy. A good architect should be able to explain how they help the church make informed decisions before expensive surprises show up later.
Church leaders should also understand where construction cost information is coming from. Architects are trained to design buildings, not to track the daily fluctuations of construction pricing. Labor availability, material shortages, and market conditions can change quickly. That is why the most reliable budgets come from professionals who are actively bidding and building projects in the field. A healthy design process keeps those voices involved early so the church can make informed decisions with real numbers.
Most churches do not build their entire campus all at once. Ministry grows. Needs change. Congregations expand. What begins as a single building project often becomes the first step in a much longer journey.
That is why churches benefit from working with an architect who understands master planning and long-term campus strategy. Instead of designing a single building in isolation, the architect should be thinking about how the campus could grow over the next ten, twenty, or even thirty years.
A thoughtful master plan helps protect future opportunities. It can reserve land for future buildings, anticipate parking expansion, and prevent early design decisions from blocking future growth. Without that foresight, churches often discover later that a building placed in the wrong location makes the next phase of ministry far more difficult and expensive.
Ask the architect how they approach long-term campus planning. A good church architect should be able to show examples of campuses that were designed to grow over time. Buildings may come in phases, but the vision for the campus should be thoughtful from the very beginning.
This may be the most subjective question on the list, but it still matters. When you review a church architect’s portfolio, pay attention to what happens in your gut. Do you find yourself leaning in? Can you imagine ministry happening in those spaces? Do the buildings feel thoughtful, alive, and aligned with the mission of the church?
This is not about chasing trendy design or trying to impress people with expensive architecture. It is about discerning whether the architect’s work gives you confidence that they can help bring your church’s vision into reality. If nothing in the portfolio stirs trust, imagination, or possibility, keep looking. You are not just hiring someone to draw plans. You are choosing someone who will help shape the future environment of your ministry.
Choosing a church architect is one of the most important early decisions a church will make in a building project. Done well, that choice can help a church clarify its vision, steward its resources wisely, and create a building that supports ministry for decades. Done poorly, it can lead to frustration, inefficiency, and expensive regret.
So take your time. Ask thoughtful questions. Push for clarity. The right church architect will not be threatened by that process. In fact, they will welcome it.
Because the goal is not simply to design a building. It is to create an environment where ministry can flourish for generations.
